At the start of this blog, I was asking myself, why should I write this? Will anyone even read this thing? What should I even talk about? To answer these questions, I started to read other dentists' blogs. The majority of these blogs are well-intentioned, informative pieces. Then, there are the rest.
It was relatively easy to see what these "other blogs" were about. One type of blog is the advertisement blog, in which there is little worthwhile content other than a commercial for the types of services provided. Think: persuasive sales pitch. When you are reading a blog in which the term "dental veneer" appears fourteen times in four sentences, you know you have come across an advertisement blog.
The second, and least recognizable, is the third-party blog. This is a service run by a third party that will create a blog for you and present it as if it were your own. It can sometimes be difficult to recognize these blogs. A tip: If you feel as if you are reading People magazine rather than a article created personally by a dentist, then you are most likely reading a third party blog. But if you are truly interested in the fact that Tom Cruise's midline is off-center or the cost of Little Wayne's diamond "grill," then great, read away.
The purpose for the 58 Dental Blog is to write about topics encountered during the daily practice of dentistry. Usually, topics stem from patient questions, concerns, or misunderstandings of dentistry. I share these posts so that potentially others will have some level of clarity concerning their own queries or issues. It is easy to make unsubstantiated claims within a blog post, but I try to support what I am saying with corresponding links to current dental research or dental organizations, such as the American Dental Academy.
My hope is that these posts will help educate others, increase awareness about dentistry, and maybe once in awhile create a couple of laughs. Thanks for reading.
